Respect for the Environment

REDUCING OUR IMPACTS IS A PRIORITY

Mining and fertilizer manufacturing are intensive endeavors. Resource extraction, consumption of materials, generation of emissions in operations and water use are all necessary to fulfilling our mission of helping the world grow the food it needs. We know that respect for the environment, and those who rely on it, is essential to the sustainability of our business—and we are committing significant resources to reducing our impacts and improving our use of shared resources.

Here’s a glimpse into the environmental issues most important to us and what we’re doing to reduce our impacts.

Water

This matters to us because:

Water is an essential input in our operations and across the agricultural value chain. It is also a critical resource for society, including the communities and ecosystems in which we operate.

How we are managing this priority:

  • Reducing companywide freshwater use
  • Minimizing tailings management area storage and phosphogypsum pond water inventories
  • Maintaining the quality of the water we use in the communities where we operate
  • Promoting agricultural best practices and 4R Nutrient Stewardship to minimize runoff of fertilizers into waterways
  • Partnering with organizations that address habitat conservation, nutrient stewardship and watershed restoration

Air

This matters to us because:

We use energy and generate greenhouse gas and other emissions in the mining, production, distribution and use of our crop nutrient products.

Climate change poses risks to the health and wellbeing of the society, and it creates risk for our business. Air quality is an important issue for communities around our operations.

How we are managing this priority:

  • Reducing our companywide greenhouse gas emissions
  • Managing “other” emissions and pollutants like sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxide and particulate matter
  • Improving energy efficiency and maximize production and internal use of cogenerated electricity

Land

This matters to us because:

We extract natural resources – potash ore and phosphate rock – from the earth to make crop nutrients that help farmers maximize crops they grow on every acre of farmland. We have a responsibility to minimize impacts to land and biodiversity that occur because of our activities, and to enable the protection and conservation of land and soil resources.

How we are managing this priority:

  • Maintaining biodiversity management plans at all facilities
  • Continuing best-in-class reclamation and land restoration efforts in our phosphate operations
  • Managing tailings in a way that is protective of employees, communities and the environment
  • Developing of a comprehensive waste strategy that promotes landfill diversion and beneficial reuse of byproducts
